It was early on Friday morning when AFTPC took to the main stage at Boardmasters 2016 to kick start the festival, the crowds were piling into the arena and WHAT A WAY to welcome them to three days of sun filled brilliance atop of a hill in Watergate Bay. We hung around after their set and caught up with them in the 'Media Garden' just behind the press enclosure, here's how we got on....
I interviewed you guys back in July 2015 and I asked about how the band name came about to which you replied "It’s a long, tedious story that requires a bottle of Demerara rum and a hurricane lantern, a stormy night, with the waves crashing on the rocks and wind rattling the window panes" as you can see, it’s not any of those and I don't have a bottle of rum with me, can you tell me anyway?
It would take so long your little recorder would run out of batteries!
I have 14 hours so you’re okay!
The problem is the story will take 14½ hours!
I’ll settle for the abridged version then….
To be honest with you I don’t know how it came about so let’s just pass on that one!
I WILL get the story out of you one day….
You released a limited red vinyl 7" of 'This May Hurt/Cut So Close' for RSD 2016, how did this come about?
That was through our label easy action records, they released it as a Record Store Day exclusive for 2016 as an introduction to the band and our first piece of vinyl….and it’s red
Did you have a choice of colour?
Yes we did, we put it to the vote and it came out unanimously that it was going to be red, the colour actually looked better than we thought it would!
I was going to ask why red but we haven’t got 14 ½ hours so we’d better move on!
I know this isn't your first time performing at Boardmasters? How does the lineup this year compare to the past?
The Lineup this year is pretty good, very varied although it always seems to be varied, there just seems to be little bit more rock n’ roll mixed in with everything else. It’s good to see a few hip-hop acts as well as in the past the festival has been very ‘urban’. It was just refreshing to see a few other genres taking main-stage this year. The Net Loft BBC introducing stage is really strong this year, you should definitely check out WAXX who are an amazing local band, they’re a two piece who play grunge tinged/pop.
You list quite a few bands as influences on your social media pages, which one band would you say had the biggest effect on you? What was it about them? Let’s do one band from each person otherwise will be here all day!
Perron - I guess the first band that made me want to be in a band would’ve been the police as I was a big fan when I was younger, they were the first band that really made me sit up and take notice and actually want to follow them being in a band myself. I guess as a band we have so many different influences that can change from day-to-day, Nick Cave and the bad seeds are probably my favourite band ever.
What age did you first pick up a guitar?
I think at about seven, I got my first guitar and learnt a few chords and that was about it for a few years, I guess I never really learned I just played!
Zoe – I’ll have to say Radiohead, I went through a massive phase of Being obsessed by them.
Toby – I’ll also say Radiohead also placebo and any band that fell under the grunge umbrella
Are you both still into Radiohead?
Yeah definitely some of the Atoms for Peace stuff was utterly amazing, it still has that certain vibe about it where anyone could listen to it at any time and understand it but it’s still quite weird as well, I guess there’ll always be like that.
Radiohead are certainly a band that aren’t afraid of stretching the boundaries when it comes to music, I still listen to the debut album Pablo Honey which to me is one of the best albums ever made. From there they just seemed to become more and more abstract as time went on....
I see that you don't have an album out yet, when can we expect to see one?
It’ll probably take us about 14 years to get an album together! (joking) We’re just finishing the album right now with a guy called Paul Reeves at Airfield Studios in Cornwall he’s recorded bands such as Muse and Supergrass in the past and he’s brilliant to work with, we’re just in the final stages of mixing at the moment and our record label Easy Action Records will release it early next year. We’re also looking to do a few videos and drop a couple of singles between now and then as well.
Will you be looking to do a headline tour to support the album release?
Yeah definitely, hopefully it’ll all come together at the same time
Being from Cornwall, I assume that you're either keen surfers or have at least tried it before?
Perran – My dad is like the biggest surf addict in the world but for some reason it never really got passed down to me, I think it was me rebelling, my dad surfed and there was no way I was going to! I guess I just never got the bug like other people did! I love going in the sea though!
Zoe – Yes I went through a stage of my life when I want to be a surfer and I did it for a little while but the problem is I was scared of waves over 2 feet high, I guess you could say I’m fine weather surfer, if it’s small and clean I’ll go in for a splash around
Toby – Yeah I guess I’m the keen surfer out of all of us! I like to get in as often as I can but with the band taking off, I haven’t been able to get in as much as I’d like!
What are your top three tips to surviving a music festival?
Blag as many free beers as you can, don’t lock your car keys in the boot of the car, don’t give Perran your car keys, Believe me we’ve done all of those things!
Who else on the lineup are you particularly excited about seeing?
How about James Bay?
I must admit I’m not a big James Bay fan and I was quite surprised when I saw him above Primal Scream on the running order
I think what you have to appreciate is that the demographic of the festival is so much younger, the higher percentage of people at the festival have heard of James Bay and therefore he’s headlining!
Lastly, please describe Boardmasters 2016 in just 3 words....
Fun, filthy and frivolous
We'd like to thank Zoe, Perran and Toby for sparing their time to chat to us after their set, we wish them every success
