Fünke Pop is the vibrant new EP from London based psychotropic pop bandTurnpike Glow. One of 2013’s brightest and creative releases, Fünke Popfeatures four blissful, off-kilter tracks, as instantly engaging as they are technically astounding.
Taking the energy of Pheonix, the experimental side of Super Furry Animals and combining it with the no-holds-barred approach of The Flaming Lips, Turnpike Glow’s imagination soars throughout each track. The EPs second track ‘Her Flaming Lips’ is an homage to Wayne Coyne’s psychedelic outfit, using Flaming Lips song titles and visual references to narrate the story of a girl living in her own fantasy world. Vocalist and guitarist Sandro Schiena says: “In the story, the girl has that rare feeling of being happy with what she's got and not needing anything else - which is the sort of message we get when listening to The Flaming Lips or going to one of their shows”.
The accompanying ‘Her Flaming Lips’ video is another glimpse at the bands striking inventiveness. Sandro says: ““Right from the start we want to trigger the audience’s attention and make them wonder what the hell is going on. Our aim was to come up with a simple but visually entertaining idea with a final twist.”
Starting life in Rome, Turnpike Glow moved to London and in a short time have been embraced by the capitals music scene. The Fünke Pop EP (the title of which is a playful nod to the cult series Arrested Development) is released 1st July and follows up their debut EP, which gained the band plaudits from the likes of Lauren Laverne, KEXP and BBC Introducing. The new releases see’s the band become more comfortable with their sound – flitting seamlessly between pop sensibilities and psychedelic experimentation.
