At start of end of an incredible year already for BRIT and BBC Sound Poll winner Sam Smith, he announces the release of his debut album ‘In The Lonely Hour’ on 26th May through Capitol Records. 2013 saw Sam’s journey from featured vocalist on Disclosure’s big breakout hit ‘Latch’ to being awarded one of the industry’s biggest accolades for a new artist, the Brit’s Critics Choice Award. To add to the accolade Sam has just been announced as the winner of the prestigiousBBC Sound Poll 2014.
‘In The Lonely Hour’ is a 10-track labour of love for Sam ‘I said to myself, I don’t want to have a genre. ‘I wanted to take a risk’. In the course of putting it together, Sam has worked with a roll call of blue chip collaborative names including Fraser T Smith, Two Inch Punch, Eg White, Disclosure, Zane Lowe, Tourist and long term writing partner Jimmy Napes. Despite the impressive list of partnerships, the album still has Sam’s signature all over it making his own unique sound amplified by his mesmerising and unforgettable vocal.
His first single release will be the albums big pop moment, ‘Money On My Mind’, a Two Inch Punch produced smash. But there is melancholia within. Centring on the subject on an unrequited love, it is duty bound to make the listener a little teary as it uplifts. ‘I think so. I’ve been talking about album titles and people are saying “oh but it’s too sad” but that’s what it’s about. I was sad and I wrote about being sad.’
Sam’s 2013 highlights include his work with Naughty Boy on the MOBO winning, No.1 hit single ‘La La La’ to date amassing a mammoth 225 million views. Live has seen him on tour with Disclosure playing at some of the biggest events in the music calendar from Glastonbury to Coachella and the Warehouse Project, culminating in a huge TV performance with Naughty Boy at the MOBOs. Earlier this year Sam posted a raw acoustic video for his aching grief ballad ‘Lay Me Down’ reaching over a million views and gaining a further army of followers. This was followed by his debut EP ‘Nirvana’released through PMR which was embraced by critics and fans alike.
His live solo show has also spread its wings and with sold out dates at London’s Islington Assembly Hall, The Mercury Lounge in New York, two sell out dates at The Troubadour in LA and a recently announced 2014 tour, which has seenShepherds Bush already sell out and a further London date sold out at the Roundhouse. Before Christmas fans got a taste of South Beach sunshine when courtesy of an afternoon in the studio collectively Sam, Jimmy, Disclosure and the legendary Nile Rodgers decided to release ‘Together’ accompanied by a video from acclaimed illustrator and designer Kate Moross.
With the release of ‘Money On My Mind’ in February, his UK tour, the debut album due in the Spring and a freshly inked deal with Capitol Records in the US - now making him a global signing, winning the Brits Critics Choice Award and now the BBC Sound Poll 2014 is shaping up to be a big.
